Group work: Making a scenario in a logical order  

Three groups are given “an issue” respectively as a topic of their discussion. The issues are:

1. Japan’s Low Birth Rate

2. Increasing Plastic Waste

3. High Price of Electricity

The groups develop the possible scenario starting from their issue in a logical order using “cause and effect” method which means one stage must be a cause of the next stage. The end of the scenario shows how our life would be.

One group imagined the effect of the issue of “increasing plastic waste” as follows:

 Plastic waste goes to the sea → The temperature of the sea gets high → Fish move to cold area → Fishermen lose their jobs → The price of fish gets high → Consumers cannot eat enough fish

Another group also wrote the worst-case scenario, but the third group tried a positive case as well as a negative case. Their positive scenario finishes with “(People) Getting rich and healthy”.

論理的順序で物事の進展を考える目的で、3グループは与えられた問題点について話し合いました。「日本の出生率の低下」、「プラスチックごみの増加」、「電気料金の高騰」についてです。それぞれが自分たちの生活に及ぼす影響を、原因と結果の論理的繋がりをベースに「最終的に私たちの生活はどうなってしまうか」という結論に達するまでのシナリオ作りです。

一番目のグループは「プラスチックごみの増加」から次のように展開しました。

ゴミが海洋に投棄される→水質汚染→水温の上昇→魚類が低温の海洋に逃げる→漁業者が職を失う→魚価の高騰→消費者に十分な魚が行き届かない

二番目のグループも最悪のケースになるシナリオの展開でした。しかし三番目のグループはネガティブなケースとともにポジティブなケースも考えました。ポジティブなシナリオでは「最終的に人々はより豊かに健康になる」という結論に達しました。

Topical discussion: Phone fraud

One participant said that she had a telephone call and the person on the other end of the line pretended to be her son.  As she was prepared for this type of “It’s me” scam, there was no damage. The salon discussed phone fraud and experience of getting fake phones, then surprisingly more than half of 13 participants have experienced. None of them were swindled.

いわゆる「オレオレ詐欺」の電話を受けたと、一人の参加者が話しました。相手は息子になりすましていましたが、十分に警戒していたので、何の被害もありませんでした。電話による詐欺について、ディスカッションをしましたが、驚いたことに13人の参加者の半数以上が、経験あり、とのことでした。もちろん被害はありませんでした。

Group Work: Developing your story

One picture, a scene, was drawn on the board by a participant.

Each of three groups developed their own story starting from the drawing. The story must consist of 10 sentences or more and a punchline. One group created a love story based on the real story. Another group started with a cute story of pets and ended with an unexpected twist while the other group took a method to use the scene twice, present and 10 years later. All stories had a very interesting punchline.

参加者の協力により一つの場面がボードの上に描かれました。この場面を使って、3グループがそれぞれの話を発展させていきました。ストーリーは10以上の文とオチが必要です。最初のグループは実際にあった話をもとにラブ・ストーリーを創りました。次のグループはかわいいペットたちの話で始まったのですが、最後にどんでん返しがありました。最後のグループの話は現在と10年後に同じ場面を2回使う、という手法を取りました。それぞれのオチも完璧でした。

Chatting:

One participant talked about her daily oral exercises. According to her, oral exercises aim to improve the coordination of the muscles of tongue, lips and jaw, and your speech skills and help you enjoy meals. She demonstrated the tongue movements and introduced some useful phrases which seem tongue twister.

A man participant who ran Yokohama Marathon in October, took part in Honolulu Marathon in December and completed a full marathon. He said there were 25,000 participants in total with 7,000 from Japan. After the race, he enjoyed a tour of Oahu.

「お口の体操」を続けているという参加者が、その効用について説明し、実際にどのように行っているのかをデモンストレーションしてくれました。練習用の紙にはちょっと早口言葉のようにも見える語句が並んでいました。

10月に横浜マラソンに参加した元気な男性は12月にはホノルルマラソンに参加して完走したそうです。全体で25,000人の参加者でそのうち日本人は7,000人。マラソンの後はオアフ島の観光を楽しんだそうです。

Discussion: Complaints between neighbors over noise

Recently we heard a controversial news of Nagano City: the municipality closed a children park because of noise complaints from one resident. One participant took up this case, as she had been annoyed by noisy neighbors’ kids. Other participants told their experience of noise issues. Some said that not only kids but also young people make noises in the nearby parks, playing music at a high volume in the middle of the night, setting off the skyrocket fireworks or hot-rodders. We also talked about the mosquitone, the unpleasant, high frequency sound, which the better you hear, the younger you are.

There is a case that we apparently hear the sound of someone being abused or the sound of violence. One participant said that it is a sensitive issue whether we should report to the police or intervene.

“It is not a noise complaint”, another said “but it would be an issue if there is a plan of building a crematorium in your neighborhood. 

最近、長野市のある公園が近所の一人の住人の「騒音」の苦情によって閉鎖になったというニュースが話題になりました。サロン参加者にも近所の子供の騒ぐ声に悩まされた経験を持つ人がいました。子供だけでなく若者が公園で夜中に大音量の音楽をかけたり、花火を打ち上げたり、暴走族まがいの騒音を立てたりするケースもだいぶ迷惑となっているようです。モスキートーン（若者により聞こえる不快音）などの話も出ました。近所の家から家庭内暴力、虐待が疑われる音を聞くケースもあるそうなのですが、警察に通報する、或いは介入するなどは微妙な問題と言えるでしょう。「近所に火葬場を建てる計画がある、と聞いたら、それは地域の問題として取り上げることになると思う」という参加者もいました。

Seasonal topic and activity

The nativity scene is a traditional Christmas decoration in Western countries. One introduced the scene by putting some figures and items on the table. Those stuffed figures were made by herself. And she took out a picture book and asked us to read one page at a time one by one. The title was “The Birth of Jesus Christ” and all of us enjoyed the Yuletide mood.

欧米ではキリスト降誕の場面は伝統的なクリスマス飾りの一つとされています。一人の参加者がこの降誕場面をサロンで再現してくれました。お手製のぬいぐるみフィギャーをテーブルの上に並べて、すてきな雰囲気でした。その中でキリストの誕生という絵本を参加者全員で1ページずつ読みました。クリスマスムードたっぷりのひと時になりました。

Dialogue Reading

Papers with a short dialogue on them were distributed to each participant. After reading it we guessed who these persons in the dialogue are, their background, the relationship between them and how they feel about each other.

二人による対話文が各人に配布されました。それを読んでから、どのような人達なのか、二人の関係は、お互いが相手に抱いている感情などについて、全員で話し合いました。

Group work:   Endangered cultures, traditions, custom

Red List is the list of threatened biological species, species facing a risk of extinction. Its aim is to tell the importance of conservation issues to people all over the world. We think some of our cultures/traditions would extinct if we should not take any measures at this moment. Our salon discussed it in small groups.

The first group chose “tatami”. As Japanese lifestyle has been westernized, rooms furnished with traditional tatami have been gradually declining. However, tatami is suitable for Japanese climate and eco-friendly. Recently we have modernized tatami, colorful tatami, and even tatami made of Japanese paper which is water-resistant.

The second group discussed Japanese New Year’s traditions.

Today, New Year is not such a special day as it used to be. The number of kimono-clad people has decreased, and fewer and fewer people seem to drink “toso” on New Year’s Day. All family members used to play together special New Year games, but these days this tradition is being replaced by new individually play games. The group said that observing the traditions is maintaining Japanese identity and that it is our responsibility to pass them on to the next generations.

The third group talked about “mochitsuki”, mochi-pounding.

It is a special event of the end of the year. We use special utensils such as a mortar, a mallet and a rice steamer. One said it was an exciting time for children with full expectation of coming new year.  Mochitsuki used to be held on a family basis/extended family basis. It was a moment we felt a sense of oneness.  Pounding rice is a work that uses muscles, so usually Father or uncles were responsible for it. It was a time when children feel proud of their father’s strength. The group said “We feel sorry that kids would not have memories of this type of family unity”.

レッドリストは絶滅危惧種のリストとしてよく知られていますが、保全の重要性を世界の人々が認識することを目的としています。私たちのサロンでは、文化や伝統の中でも保全の努力をしなければ消えて行ってしまうものもある、という考えから、小グループに分かれてどのような文化が消滅の危機に立たされているのか、その背景は、等について話し合いました。

第一グループは畳を取り上げ、その効用と利便性について説明しました。畳は日本の風土に合った、環境にも優しいものです。住宅の西洋化につれてなくなっていくことは寂しいが、一方、カラフルな畳や水にも強い和紙でできた畳のような新たな取り組みもあると、話していました。

第二グループは日本の正月の伝統についてディスカッションをしました。

昔のように正月は特別の日ではなくなったようです。着物を着る人も減り、屠蘇を飲む習慣もだんだんなくなってきています。家族そろってゲームをする習慣は個人ゲームにとってかわられています。「伝統行事を続けることは日本人としてのアイデンティティーを守ることであり、次世代へと繋げていくことが私たちの責任だと思う」とグループは語っていました。

第三グループは「餅つき」について話し合いました。臼、杵という特別の道具を使うこの暮れの行事は、子供たちには新年への期待を膨らませる時でした。餅つきは家族単位（親戚なども含めて）で行いますので、一体感を味わうことができます。餅を搗くのは力仕事で、だいたいは父親か伯父さん（叔父さん）で、子供たちが父の逞しさを自慢に思う時でもありました。「家族が一つになって何かをする、という思い出が希薄になっている現代の子供たちはかわいそう」とグループの一人が語りました。

Chatting:

One said that he participated in Yokohama Marathon 2022 held on October 30.  He ran Minatomirai 7km course among four events (Full marathon, Minatomirai 7km run, Wheelchair challenge and online marathon) and completed it within the time limit (80 min). According to him there were 22,000 participants. One of main features of the event was that the full marathon course included a part of Shuto Expressway Wangan Route, usually a motorway.

Another talked about chrysanthemums, symbolic autumn flowers. Recently she visited Sankeien Garden where chrysanthemums blooming had peaked in. She said there are many types of mums in the garden and showed a photo of one kind of chrysanthemums. The flowers are so flat that a paper holder supports the petals of each flower. According to her the mum is the origin of Imperial Family Crest.

10月30日に開催された横浜マラソンの「みなとみらい７㎞」に参加した人の話です。フルマラソン、車いすマラソン、オンライン・マラソンなどすべての参加者は22,000に上ったとのこと。この横浜マラソンの一つの魅力はフルマラソンで自動車専用道路である首都高速湾岸線を走ることが出来ることだそうです。

三渓園に菊の花を見にいった参加者の話。菊は今が盛りで園内にはさまざまな種類の菊がありましたが、一つの珍しい菊の写真を見せてくれました。フラットな菊で厚紙のようなもので下から花弁を支えています。この菊は皇室の菊のご紋の元になった種類だそうです。

Discussion: The unique culture of soccer players and supporters

FIFA World Cup 2022 has just started. As Japan beat German team, many Japanese have become (suddenly) interested in matches. This phenomenon is similar to the situation in 2019 autumn when Japanese Rugby Team advanced to the quarterfinals in Rugby World Cup which produced many bandwagon fans.  One questioned why (Japanese) players have their hair dyed bright colors and another said that painting on their face looks strange.

The other said the assertiveness of players during interviews is something that we Japanese have not seen before, but one said getting tattooed would not be personally acceptable.

サッカーのワールドカップが中東カタールで開催中です。日本が強豪ドイツに勝ったということで、サッカーファンが増えています。ラグビー・ワールドカップで日本が大活躍した3年前の秋の状況に似ています。その時は「にわか（ファン）」という言葉がはやりました。サッカーの選手、サポーターの独特の文化について話し合いました。髪を派手な色に染める、顔にペインティングをするなど。選手がインタビューの時に見せる自信に満ちた自己表現は今までの日本人の文化には見られないものです。「刺青はちょっと…」いう人もいました。

Discussion: National travel discount program

We discussed the government-supported travel discount program, which travelers get 40% discount of their traveling fee. Some of Salon participants used this system for their trip. One questioned who would benefit from this program as its source is tax payers money. The other pointed out the coupon that the travellers receive, the equivalent of ￥3,000 coupon per each day of their travelling, but making full use of the coupon is complicated especially for the elders. Some accommodations do not issue a paper coupon, instead, give you it by installing the app. on your smartphone. 

全国旅行支援プログラムを利用して旅を楽しんでいる人はたくさんいます。旅行代金の４０％が割引になるシステムだそうで、一体だれが得をするのだろう、と疑問を投げかける参加者もいました。所詮は国民の税金から支払われるわけですから。また一日につき3000円のクーポンをもらえる制度も、若者向けなのだろう、宿泊施設によってはスマホにアプリを入れてからの利用となり、高齢者にとっては使いこなせない制度になっている、という人もいました。

Group work: Great inventions of our time

Three major historical inventions are “gun powder”, “compass” and “typography” as we learned in history class.  What are great inventions of our time? The salon talked about breakthrough inventions since 1950s, and divided into three discussion groups.

The first group picked up “vending machine”. The second group discussed “DVD” and the last group talked about “internet”. Each had a vigorous discussion, including the years of the invention, how our life used to be before the invention, how our life has changed, who have benefit from it, etc.

歴史上の三大発明は火薬、羅針盤、活版印刷と言われています。それでは私たちの時代の画期的な発明品は何でしょうか。サロンでどのようなものがあるか話し合った後、3グループに分かれて選んだ発明品についてのディスカッション。第一グループは自動販売機、第二グループはDVD, 第三グループはインターネット。発明された年代、発明前後の生活の変化、どのような人が一番恩恵を受けたか、等を熱心に話し合いました。

Group work: Let’s promote local products！　

All participants were divided into four groups according to their home prefectures. Each group discussed how to promote their local products. They talked about the product items, reasons, aims, how they promote it and also the future scene. After the discussion they made presentations.

Team 1 was the group of people from western part of Japan. One of the team members is from Saga and they picked up mutsugoro, a mudskipper. This fish is a symbol of the prefecture. However, non-locals hardly know it or they wonder if it is edible. Team 1 presented how they become known nationwide and introduced its recipe.

Team 2 was the group of people from Hokkaido and Northern Honshu. The city they selected was Obihiro, Hokkaido. The products they wanted to promote were red beans and rum, both of which already have good reputation across Japan.

Team 3 focused only on shumai, as the team members are all Yokohamian. They discussed how Yokoham shumai would become more attractive and sell better and then introduced some new ideas.

Team 4 talked about Ota Wholesale Market in Tokyo because two of the team members were born in Ota ward. The market is for both vegetables and flowers. The team wanted more people to be interested in the market activity and their ideas included guiding market tours.

参加者は出身地方別に4つのグループに分かれました。そしてその地域の物産を促進させるアイディアについて話し合いました。

チーム1は西日本出身の人たちですが、一人が佐賀出身ということで、ムツゴロウのプロモーションを考えました。県のシンボルとも言われているこの魚は全国的には認知度が低く、「食べられるの」と言われることもあるそうです。このチームはムツゴロウを全国区にするためのアイディアとレシピを紹介しました。

チーム2は北海道、東北出身の人たちです。北海道の帯広の物産を選びました。小豆とラム肉はその品質の良さですでに有名ですが、さらなるプロモーションの方法について話し合いました。

チーム3は横浜で生まれ育った人たちのグループで、横浜シュウマイについて話し合いました。シュウマイは様々なアイディアを付け加えることのできる食品ですので、たくさんのアイディアが生まれました。

 チーム4は大田区生まれの人が2人いる、ということで大田市場について話し合いました。大田市場は青果と花きの卸売市場です。より多くの人に市場の仕事、役割などについて知ってもらいたいと思い、市場ツアーを考えました。

Opening chat:

Some participants made announcements of events: Monthly English Seminar of Kamakura YMCA, Tour of Gumyoji Downtown, Exhibition of Tole Paintings (according to one theory, the word “tole” comes from “tool”)　and so on.　

We talked about “Kingdom”, a movie with a good reputation. It is a Japanese live-action movie based on a famous comic and the story is set in the Warring-States period, ancient China.

A participant showed BIG ISSUE magazine she had bought at Kannai Station on that day. We discussed the system of sales and remuneration to be paid to the homeless.

Another participant told her story about ¥500 coins in a piggy bank. It became full and she took all the coins to a bank for changing into banknotes.　She did not go to the counter for changing but she used ATMs instead.　It took her a lot of time. Total value of the coins was more than ¥600,000.

A sheet of collection of jokes “HOW HOT IS IT JOKES” prepared by one participant was distributed to each. All of us went through it and talked about the most favorite joke: “It's so hot that corn on the stalks starts popping.”

One talked about her trip to New York State in August. It was a business trip but she extended her trip to neighboring state and visited an Amish village. She explained how the village is and how the people live. The village itself is a kind of tourist attract but the villagers maintain their traditional style of living. She wanted to take photos of village women wearing only blue dress, but photo-taking was prohibited.  At a shop where a lot of souvenirs were on shelves, she bought a doll handmaid by villagers. As you can see in the picture, the doll in blue.

いろいろな活動をしている方たちから、イベントの紹介がありました。鎌倉YMCAの月例英語セミナー、英語でガイドする弘明寺ツアー、トールペインティングの展示会など（一説によるとトールペインティングはtool painting から来たそうです）。

評判の映画「キングダム」について話し合いました。これは同名の漫画を実写映画化したもので、中国の春秋戦国時代を背景にした話だそうです。

「今朝、関内駅でこれを買いました」と言って一人の参加者が雑誌「BIG ISSUE」を見せてくれました。この雑誌の販売システムやホームレスの人たちがどのように係わっているかについて話し合いました。

５００円硬貨貯金をしていた人は貯金箱が満杯になったので銀行で両替をしたそうです。手数料無料を利用するため、複数のATMで何回も両替作業をしたとのこと。合計金額は６０万円以上になったそうです。

ある参加者は「How Hot Is It 」ジョークを集めた紙を全員に配りました。酷暑を経験した私たちはこれらのジョークを読んで納得。「暑すぎて畑のトウモロコシがポップコーンになる」という、やっぱりアメリカ人発想かな、と思うものもありました。

 8月にニューヨーク州に仕事で行った参加者は、足を延ばして近隣州にある「アーミッシュ村」を訪ねた話をしました。村の様子、人々の生活の仕方などサロン参加者にとって興味のあるもので、たくさんの質問が出ました。この村では女性たちは全員ブルーの衣服を纏っていて、その姿の写真を撮りたかったのですが、写真撮影は禁止されているとのこと。村自体が観光地になっているため、土産物はたくさん売っています。村の女性を模してブルーのドレスと帽子を身に着けている人形を購入しました。写真を見て下さい。

Group work: Retelling of Japanese old folk tales

There are many old folk tales in Japan and most Japanese remember the stories though vaguely. First all participants joined telling the story of “Momotaro” sentence by sentence. Then we discussed morals, lessons, messages, hidden meanings of the story. We also talked about social situation, and daily life we read between lines.

“Momotaro” tells us the importance of cooperation and unification (Momotaro, a dog, a monkey and a pheasant) to fight against evil. One said Demon Island would signify a foreign country.  Curiosity (picking up the peach and bringing it home) would produce good results, though a proverb says “Curiosity killed the cat”. The other pointed it is strange for a dog and a monkey live together peacefully in spite of expression of “being on cat-and-dog terms”. We talked about the promotion effect of the local food “Kibidango”.

Then, three small groups retold and discussed one story respectively.

“Grandpa Flower Bloom”: A lesson of this story is “Rewarding Good and Punishing Evil” and it tells us the difficulty of living in a small community.

“Urashima Taro”: A message of the story is “Time flies when you are having fun”. One said that everyone has their own way of feeling the length of time.　A lesson is that we should keep our promise.

“Bamboo Princess”: The message of the story is that life is short and parting is always with our life.  One said that we know the moon played an important role in the community those days.

日本ではたくさんの昔話が語り継がれてきました。ストーリーも地方により微妙に異なり、それぞれの物語の持つ教訓も人によって解釈が違うようです。サロンではまず桃太郎の話を全員で一文ずつ語ってみました。記憶がおぼろげなところがいくつもありました。次にこの話の教訓、メッセージ、隠された意味、背景の状況などについて話しました。

桃太郎、犬、サル、雉が正義のために団結し力を合わせることの重要性を伝えている話、鬼ヶ島というのは外国のことでそこに攻め入る話という解釈もありました。「好奇心が強すぎると身を亡ぼす」という諺があるが、この話では桃を家に持ち帰り、切ってみるという好奇心が良い結果を生んだのではないか。（犬猿の仲ではなく）平和的に共存している犬とサルは面白い、という人もいました。黍団子というその地域の食べ物を宣伝する効果も大きいかもしれない。

その後、３つのグループに分かれて他の昔話についてディスカッションを続けました。

グループ１：「花咲か爺さん」は勧善懲悪を薦める話だが、小さなコミュニティに暮らすことの難しさも伝えている。

グループ２：「浦島太郎」の話のメッセージは「楽しい時間はあっという間に過ぎ去る」、「時間の長さは人によって感じ方が異な

             る」そして「約束は守らなければならない」 

グループ３：「かぐや姫」の話は人生の短さと別れは人生の一部であること、を伝えている。一人の参加者は当時の社会では、

             月の存在が重要だったことがよく分かった、と話していました。

Opening chat

One regular participant had her elbow bone fractured and she told the salon this experience of her. One night in June she stumbled over something in her bedroom, fell down and hit her left arm against the corner of the bed. Next day she got her arm swollen and she went to a clinic. The doctor said that she needed to undergo a surgery on her elbow after the swelling goes down. She had to wait for 13 days before the operation with her painful swollen elbow.  Now she has been undertaking rehab for one month.

Good lesson she learned:  Danger is everywhere, even in your house and your routine activity.

One man participant said that during his daily jogging, he saw a beautiful foreign young lady in the redbrick warehouse park. “I spoke to her and can you guess who she is?”, he continued proudly, “She is the wife of Mr. Tylor Austin, a baseball player of Yokohama DeNA Baystars.

Another told that she got a lot of mosquito bites while she was in the backyard for weeding for an hour. She asked the salon members about mosquitos’ favorite color. The answer is “black”, and she advised us to choose white or light color clothes for avoiding mosquito bites. One who may have a good scientific background explained “with dark color clothes, your body temperature would be higher which is a better condition for mosquitos to be active”.

Another participant talked about a TV program she recently watched. The documentary program went that some European women who are rich, active but elderly, visit Egypt to get married to local young men. The senior citizens want “love” while the Egyptian youth desperately want “money”. Just letting you know, these marriages are official and legal.

The other talked a seasonal topic: “Visit to family graves”

One day during the Obon week, she went to the cemetery for visiting her late husband grave.  It is her annual event, she told us.

先月サロンをお休みした参加者が彼女のケガについて話しました。ある6月の夜、寝室で何かにつまずき、ベッドの角に左腕をぶつけて、翌朝ひじが骨折していることが判明しました。彼女の左腕は腫れあがり、その腫れが引くまでは手術を受けることが出来ないとのことで、腫れあがって痛い腕とともに13日間過ごしたそうです。手術は無事済み、現在はリハビリに通っているそうです。この経験で得た教訓は「危険はどこにでもある、家の中でも通常の活動でも注意を怠ってはならない」ということだそうです。

1人の男性参加者は面白い話をしました。ある朝いつものジョギングをしているときに、一人の美しい若い外国人女性に遭遇しました。場所は赤レンガ倉庫のあたりでした。彼はジョギングをしながら彼女に声をかけてみました。「彼女は誰だったと思いますか？」彼はサロンのメンバーに問いかけました。彼女は「横浜DeNA ベイスターズ」のオースチン選手の奥さんだったそうです。

「蚊は何色が好きか知っていますか」と一人の参加者が聞きました。彼女は最近庭で草取りをしているときに盛大に蚊に刺されたそうです。答えは黒ということで、「蚊に刺されるのを防ぐためには白、薄い色のものを身に着けるといいですよ」というアドバイスがありました。別の人は「濃い色の衣服を着ていると体温が高くなり、蚊にとって好条件となる」と科学的な説明を加えました。

別の参加者は最近テレビで見たドキュメンタリー番組の話をしました。お金を持っている元気な年配の女性たちがヨーロッパからエジプトにやってきて、現地の若い男性と結婚をする、というトレンドがあるそうです。この女性たちは「愛がほしい」のだそうで、エジプトの若者たちは「お金が欲しい」とのことですが、双方とも独身ですしこの結婚は法的に何の問題もないそうです。

季節的な話題として、ある人がお盆にお墓参りをした話をしました。亡き夫の墓参で、毎年彼女が行っていることだそうです。

Opening chat

Some stories about creatures were introduced.

One was about crows. We usually see flocks of crows in our towns. A friend of one salon participant got her head picked by a crow when her eyes happened to meet with the crow near the garbage collection point. She saw a doctor and got vaccination (maybe against tetanus) for three times.

Another was about medaka fish a participant keeps in some containers in her backyard. One day she found the medaka in one container disappeared. She said “I still have not detected the reason, guessing that frogs, birds or cats may be culprits”

The other talked about her visit to Enoshima Aquarium. She was fascinated by the movement of jelly-fish in a tank. Jelly-fish were dancing so mysteriously with some special lights on, she said, “it looked like that I was watching an artificial environmental video.”

参加者の方々から生き物に関するトピックがいくつか出ました。

ある参加者の友人がゴミの集積所でカラスに頭をつつかれた、という物騒な話がありました。たまたまごみを捨てに出た際に、そのカラスと「目が合ってしまったから」だそうで、すぐクリニックに行き、その後3回ワクチンの接種（多分、破傷風）を受けたそうです。

庭でいくつかの容器に入れてメダカを飼っている参加者は、ある日一つの容器からメダカが全部いなくなっていることに気が付きました。「理由はまだわからないのですが、多分、カエルか、野鳥か、野良猫の仕業でしょう」と話していました。

別の参加者は江ノ島水族館に行った話をしました。彼女は特にクラゲの水槽に魅せられた、とのことです。クラゲの神秘的な動きと照明効果で、水槽そのものがまるで人工的な環境ビデオのように見えたとのことです。

Discussion 1:  How to stay cool these days?

Salon participants seem to have their own way to stay cool. Some said how effectively and efficiently they use the air-conditioner in their house, for example drawing the curtains at times.  Others said they do not use air-conditioners often, because of the wind blowing through their houses. 

When they go out, many said they use parasols (there was no male parasol user in the salon). Creative products were introduced such as a gel-type neck cooler (frozen before using), or a cool-touch towel (soaked in and shaken off the water before using).

連日の暑さを、どのように凌いでいるか、について話し合いました。エアコンの効果的な使い方や、外からの涼風をどのように取り入れるか、など皆さんいろいろなアイディアを持っています。外出時には、ほとんどの方が日傘を持ち歩く、と言っていましたが、男性で日傘を使っている人はいませんでした。新製品のジェルタイプ・ネッククーラー（冷凍してから使用）とか冷感タオル（水に浸してから水分を振り落とす）などが紹介されました。

Discussion 2:  Disaster evacuation

Most salon members are aware of their designated evacuation sites but some argued, “Going to the evacuation site is not always the best way. Some experts say staying home would be safer.”

As to the evacuation kit, many of the members prepare it and we talked about the items of evacuation goods (prepared in their evacuation kit): water (long life), medical items, writing material, flashlight, large plastic bags, lighter, and so on.

災害避難について。ほとんどの方は自分の地域の広域避難場所についてよく知っているようですが、「避難場所に行くことが最良とは限らない。専門家の話によると自宅で待機する方が安全」という参加者もいました。

非常用持ち出しセットを用意している方は多いのですが、内容についてはそれぞれ優先順位があるようです。皆さんで避難グッズを挙げてみました。

Group work: Making and answering trivia quizzes

TRIVIA is unimportant facts or details that are considered to be amusing rather than serious or useful (from a dictionary).

Three groups respectively made some trivia quizzes from which five questions were selected by the facilitator. Then 15 questions were asked to all groups. Each group had one answering sheet and group members talked together and cooperated to make answers.

All participants made a great effort to make quizzes. Using smartphones was not allowed here. Some questions are shown below.

「トリビア」とはある辞書の説明によると「あまり重要でない事実・詳細のことで、深刻なものとか、役に立つものというより面白いもの」だそうです。

３つのグループに分かれて、トリビアクイズをたくさん作ってもらいました。その中からファシリテーターが１グループ５つのクイズを選びました。各グループは、全１５のクイズに答えました。このグループ・ワークの間は、スマホで調べることは許されません。皆さんクイズ作りには頑張っていました。いくつかのクイズを紹介します。

Opening chat:

“I tested positive for coronavirus”, said one participant.  He explained that he had been very cautious about COVID19 for

these years but that in February  he felt exhausted and then got an antigen test. It was just one week before his scheduled

third booster shot. Fortunately his symptoms were mild.

「今年の2月にコロナに感染しました」とある人が発言しました。他の参加者はいろいろな質問をしました。第３回目のワクチンを 

受ける予定になっていたちょうど１週間前、だるさを感じ抗原検査を受けたのだそうです。症状は軽かったとのこと。

“I was so surprised to realize that Tokyo still retains the atmosphere of old daimyos’ residential area, when I went through

a street in Bancho the other day” one told us about her experience. She had some business to visit the area in Chiyoda-

ku. It was completely different from the bustle of the capital. The street was tranquil with little traffic and few pedestrians.

Both sides of it were lined with big houses and Japanese mansions. The subdued  atmosphere reminded her of a famous

Japanese ghost story “Bancho Sara-yashiki”.  She said it felt like she was time-travelling to Edo period.

Another talked about his visit to Kanagawa Museum of Modern Literature for Donald Keene, 100^th Anniversary Exhibition.

It exhibits many of the drafts, manuscripts and letters of Dr. Keene, a leading scholar of Japanese culture and literature

studies. “This exhibition is very impressive and would appeal to any Japanese”, he said “it is worth visiting”.

「生誕100年、ドナルド・キーン展」は現在神奈川近代文学館で開催中です。キーン氏の手紙や草稿などが展示され、とても印象的

で日本人に訴えるものがある、と一人の参加者が話してくれました。一見の価値がある、とのことです。

Discussion1: Natural disasters

We met together at our salon on June 24^th when usually we would have been in the rainy season.  This year we have abnormal temperature as high as 35°for June. The salon discussed the natural disasters people face on global base, giving names of them: earthquake, tsunami, flood, landslide, avalanche, volcanic eruption, wildfire, drought, typhoon, hurricanes, cyclone, tornado, heat wave and so on. We talked about the difference between natural phenomena and natural disasters.

Some talked about their first-hand experience of suffering from a disaster.

One told that he was stranded at Heathrow Airport for a whole day because of the ash fall from a volcanic eruption in Iceland.

Another said about her rare experience. When she was a child, her house was flooded, because the levee of Tsurumi River burst. The inundation was well above floor level and her mother put the children on the upper shelf of the closet. She remembers vividly the scene of the room becoming a pond. Children did not understand the situation so they enjoyed the unusual experience. Then rice balls were given to disaster victims from the community. According to her, they were also provided new blankets.

Everyone in Japan experience earthquakes and there would be thousands of   stories about suffering from Great East Japan Earthquake. But the story of one participant was different. “I did not worry very much when we felt the earth shake then. The bedrock in Honmoku area is strong according to a scientific study and I believe it” he said.

 異常気象ともいえるような猛暑日が続いている中、自然災害について話し合いました。皆さんたくさんの自然災害を挙げましたが、実際に遭遇した経験を持つ人もいました。子供の頃、鶴見川の堤防決壊で氾濫し、床上浸水を経験した参加者は「子供たちは押入れの上段で、部屋が池のようになっていくのを見ていたが、日常と違う面白い思い出として残っている」と話していました。炊き出しや救援物資の真新しい毛布も楽しい思い出だったそうです。

別の人は英国ヒースロー空港で丸一日足止めされた経験がありますが、それは遠く離れたアイスランドの火山噴火の降灰が原因だったそうです。

東日本大震災の記憶は新しく、それぞれの貴重な体験をされたようですが、一人の参加者は「私の住んでいる本牧地区の岩盤は強固なもので、地震の時もあまり心配はしていない」と話していました。

Discussion 2: Household chores

Household chores are not always women's work. These days many men do some housework.  At the salon three men 

participants said they do grocery shopping, cleaning, bathroom cleaning, doing dishes and so on.

All participants discussed housework, focusing on machines, tools and utensils for each of chore.  We compared tools in

1960S with ones today.  

 家事は女性だけの仕事とは限りません。最近では多くの男性が家事をこなしています。サロンには３人の男性が参加していましたので、彼らにどのような家事をやっているか話してもらいました。掃除、買い物、フロ掃除、食後の片付けなどを日常的にしているそうです。全員で家事の種類、どのような道具、機会を使って家事をしているのか、そして1960年代の家事の仕方、道具などの比較もしました。 

Group work:

We talked about some signboards/signposts usually seen on the streets.

Each of three small groups was handed out a picture of a signboard as a discussion topic. They discussed its purpose and target people, pointing out its problems. Then they suggested some improvements.

街で見かける看板や表示などについて話し合いました。3グループに分かれ、それぞれに配布された表示の写真をテーマに、目的や対象者、改善点などについて、意見を交換した後サロン全体での発表を行いました。

Group A

This traffic signboard is very complicated. Before discussion, we looked at it very carefully for a few minutes but we did not fully understand what it tells us.  It would be too difficult for drivers to get the information by glancing at it for a short time.

Improvement:  Two separate signboards, one is for weekday and the other is for Saturday, Sunday and holiday. Introduction of digital signage which can change the contents in response to time zones and days.

この交通標識は複雑で、数分眺めていたが完全に理解することが出来なかった。ここに書かれている情報をドライバーが瞬時に得ることは難しいだろう。

改善点：週日用と週末・休日用に分けた標識にするか、日、時間によって表示内容を変えることのできる電子看板にしたらいいのではないか。

Group B

This instruction would be seen in a women’s restroom stall. It is on how to throw away used toilet papers. It would target Asian tourists because languages used here are simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Hangul and Thai. It is said that in some Asian countries they do not flush papers.

Improvement point: Need an illustration of how to flush, what to flush instead of an illustration of a Japanese lady.

As the signboard is in a Japanese tourist spot, Japanese letters should be the same size of other languages. We have a question “Why there is no English information?”

この表示は女性用トイレ個室内で見られるものだろう. トイレット・ペーパーの流し方について。表示が中国語(簡体字、繁体字)、韓国語、タイ語でかかれているので、対象者はアジアからの旅行者と思われる。トイレット・ペーパーは流すのではなく、専用容器に入れるという国もいくつかあると聞いている。 

改善点：文字だけでなく図で示すとわかりやすい。日本の観光地での表示なので日本語文字のサイズを他の言語と同じサイズに。不思議に思うことは、なぜここには英語表記がないのだろう。　

Group C

First, our group talked about the definition of “vulnerable road users”. Does it imply visually impaired or person in a wheelchair?  We think this post is located at a pedestrian crossing. The push-button for the signal is set up at a lower part of the pillar so that a person in a wheelchair can push it. We also see an illustration of a visually impaired with some written information, but we wonder if it is written in Braille or if audio information is provided here.

Or, this is for able-bodied people to tell that the button is for disabled, isn’t it?

まず、交通弱者という言葉について話し合いました。視覚障がい者や車いすの人たちのことでしょうか？この柱は横断歩道のところにあると考えられます。押しボタンは低い位置にあるので、車いすの人が押すことが出来るでしょう。視覚障がいの方のイラストと文字による情報がありますが、点字の表記があるかどうか、または音声の情報が流れるようになっているのかどうかはわかりません。あるいはこれは、健常者が間違ってボタンを押さないようにしているのかもしれません。

Role play: Create a dialogue

Divided into small groups, participants play a role of a character in a dialogue.

Step 1: Being given a picture (photo), each group talks about the persons in a picture and their relations. Decide who will take whose role.

Step 2: Create a dialogue (10 or more lines)

Step 3: Play a role of the character with prepared dialogue in front of all participants as a presentation.

ダイアローグ創作とロールプレイ

以下の手順で、各グループはダイアローグ創りとその発表を行いました。

1．一枚の写真をもとに、その写真の中の人物や関係性について話し合い、グループのメンバーが誰の役を演ずるかを決める。

２．最低１０行以上のダイアローグを考える。

３．準備したダイアローグに従って、ロールプレイをサロンの皆の前で発表する。

皆さん面白いダイアローグを創って、演技も含めて楽しい発表となりました。

Group work: Rhyming

Counting songs often have rhymes. This is the same to Japanese counting songs. English rhyming seems somewhat difficult for Japanese English learners, but we went for it. We used one well-known counting song as the original version. It goes,

One, one, one, Cat in the sun.

Two, two, two, Lions in the zoo.

Three, three, three, Birds in the tree.

Four, four, four, Rats on the floor.

Five, five, five, Bees near the hive.

Six, six, six, Ants under bricks.

Seven, seven, seven, Angels in Heaven.

Eight, eight, eight, Dogs at the gate.

Nine, nine, nine, Snails on the vine.

Ten, ten, ten, Pigs in a pen.

Each group was asked to write its new version of some lines (not all), finding rhymed words. Some lines the groups wrote are introduced here.

One, one, one, Cat in the sun. → Dog on the run.

Two, two, two, Lions in the zoo. → Girls in a queue

Four, four, four, Rats on the floor. → Boys behind the door.

Nine, nine, nine, Snails on the vine. → Rats on the pine.

Other interesting words they found are:

       Waterloo rhymes with zoo, NHK Archives with hive, BRICS with bricks

 数え歌は英語でも日本語でも韻を踏んでいることがよくあります。英語の韻は日本人の英語学習者にとって何となく難しそうですが、今月のサロンではちょっと頑張ってやってみました。

よく知られている数え歌を元歌として、それぞれのグループは韻を踏む言葉を探しながら、自分たちの替え歌を作りました。歌全部ではなく、出来る所だけ変えてみたのですが、なかなか面白い発想がありました。 

Energizer: Plus One Word Game

Spring is in full swing. We enjoyed Plus One Word Game. The category of words this time was spring.

All of us sit in a circle. The first person gives one word which is associated with spring and the second (neighboring) person repeated the word and adds another word related to spring. The third one does the same, adding his/her new item.

As there were 12 of us, the last person had to remember all 12 items.

It was a bit tough but good for memory enhancing. The words the participants gave were from natural phenomena to human activities such as cherry blossoms, opening of sports events, graduation ceremony, fresh schoolkids, etc.

春たけなわです。全員が輪になって座り、言葉を足していくゲームを楽しみました。今回のゲームのジャンルは「春から連想するもの」で、皆さんが連想した言葉には自然現象から人間の活動まで幅広いものでした。桜の花、卒業式、スポーツ・イベントの開始、新入生など・・・

Question time:

One participant was selected to answer questions from other participants.　There were many questions: from his experience of traveling in foreign countries, to philosophy he is interested in, to favorite food. He has travelled many places all over the world, but he said that he likes Germany the best. He answered a question “Do you cook?”, saying that he is very good at cooking pasta dishes. Then another male participant said that he also likes to cook tomato-based sauce for spaghetti, and then the other guy said he has been in a class of buckwheat noodles cooking for several years. In our salon, coincidentally enough, there are three men who are good at noodles cooking.

 一人の参加者が回答者になり、他の参加者からの質問に答えていきました。最低でも一人は一つの質問をしなければなりません。答えによって、会話はどんどん広がっていきました。海外旅行の経験や、哲学についての質問など様々でした。「料理はしますか」という質問に対して、彼が「パスタ料理が得意です」と答えると、他の男性参加者が「自分はトマトソースのスパゲッティには自信がある」と言い、また別の男性は「数年間そば打ち教室に通っている」ということで、奇しくも３人の男性が麺料理が得意、ということが判明しました。

Group work: Make comments from different view points

Health and Welfare Center of Naka Ward, Yokohama city has issued “Dietary Education Place Mat” for citizens. They are A3 in size, plastic coated and have some information about food. It was a good topic for discussing and making comments.

The salon was divided into three groups and each group talked respectively about one of the followings:

1. General Idea  

2. Design

3. Contents

あるものを違う視点で見て、コメント、批評をするというグループ・ワークです。横浜市中区健康福祉センターが区民のために食育ランチョンマットを作りました。A3サイズで食物の情報が盛りだくさんのプラスチック加工されたマットです。これを題材に3つのグループに分かれて話し合いました。その後各ディスカッションの結果と、批判的コメントも全体で共有されました。

The first group talked about the idea of the place mat: purposes, target groups, massages, effectiveness, usage and so on. They commented that the place mat was intended to spread information of proper daily food intake for citizens from young schoolkids to elderlies (adding kana to Chinese characters). With lots of illustrations, the messages are easy to understand and effective. Because it is used with plates and bowls on top, it is such a shame that its important information is always hidden. The group concluded they would rather like to stick the mat to the refrigerator door.

The second group made general and critical comments on design.

The overall design is good. However, it uses the cold colors a lot. The group thinks the warm colors would be more suitable because they are thought appetizing colors. Also, they commented that they preferred the back side to the front side due to dull tone of the background striped pattern.

While they praised the attractiveness, they said they did not understand why there are flags illustrated on two corners.

The third group discussed the contents of food education.

Their comments were that the place mat is a good idea to make citizens more interested in what we should eat, the content is well-balanced with nutritional and material information, and it depicts seasonal vegetables. Their recommendation was it would be more informative if it emphasizes the importance of seasonality like that summer vegetables help us cool our body and winter vegetables have the effect of keeping us warm.

最初のグループはこの食育ランチョンマット発行の意義（目的、対象グループ、メッセージ、効果、使用など）について話し合いました。

「この食育マットは小学校低学年からお年寄りまですべての年齢層の人を対象にしたもので（漢字にカナが振ってある）、イラストがたくさんあるのでメッセージがわかりやすく、効果的である。しかし、このマットは皿などの食器を上に載せて使用するので、大事な情報が隠れてしまってもったいない。むしろ冷蔵庫の扉にピンアップして使いたい」

2番目のグループはデザインの視点から、少々辛口のコメントをしました。

「全体のデザインは申し分ないのだが、寒色を多く使っている点が気になる。食欲増進の色と言われる暖色系を使った方がよりふさわしいのではないか。デザイン的には表の面より裏面の方が好みである。マットの両端にある旗のイラストに違和感を覚えるが、全体として十分人目を惹くものである」

最後のグループは        情報の内容について討議しました。 

「このランチョンマットは私たちが何を食べるべきかを考えるには良いアイディアと思われる。栄養面、食材の情報もバランスよく盛り込まれている。旬の野菜も描かれているが、旬の重要性（夏野菜は体を冷やし、冬野菜は体を温める働きがあるなど）を強調するとより効果的だろう」

Opening chat:

There are some questions from new participants about our salon, and old participants answered to each question.

One participant showed us “yubeshi”, a Japanese delicacy which she had made herself.  She said the main ingredient was yuzu citrus fruits which she had been given just a couple of months before at our salon. According to her it took two months to dry the fruits thoroughly.

A funny expression was just introduced by one of our participants. It is a “chin diaper”. It means a face mask being worn only on your chin instead of covering correctly your nose and mouth. All of us enjoyed this funny word and one drew on the board a face with a chin diaper.

新しく参加された方々から、サロンに関していくつかの質問がでました。前からいたメンバーがそれぞれの質問に回答しました。

ある参加者が珍味としての「柚餅子」を紹介してくれました。この柚餅子の材料は数カ月前にこのサロンで別の参加者が分けてくれた柚子です。彼女は２カ月間かけて完全に乾燥させたとのことです。

「こんな面白い表現を見つけました」とある参加者が「chin diaper]という言葉を紹介してくれました。マスクを鼻と口を正しく覆うようなつけ方ではなく、ただアゴに載せているだけの状態をいうのだそうです。皆さんとても面白く思いました。ある人はボードにそのイラストを描いていました。

Group Work:  Imagination and creation

We were divided into groups of three and each group were requested to make one story based on a picture respectively.  This is a typical work of our salon to enhance our imagination and creativity and it also serves as an introduction of our activities to new comers.

Each group got a different picture which depicts people doing some activities.

After talking about the picture and making a story in groups, each group presented their story to all salon members.

One example: 

This is a scene of Nordic walking in Estonia.  A team of university students is practicing. They are walking along a lakeside and an old castle is seen behind them. It is a comfortable spring day and just before noon. Nordic walking is an activity performed with walking poles. Compared to regular walking, Nordic walkers use more of their entire body so it is ideal activity for fitness.

While this story was being presented, one participant who happened to have a pair of walking poles (portable folding type) with her demonstrated how to do Nordic walking.

「想像と創造」力を高める活動はサロンの典型的なワークの一つと言えます。新しい参加者の方々に紹介の意味も込めて、このグループワークをしました。３人一組のグループに分かれて、一枚の絵をもとに自由に話を創る、というものです。グループ内で十分話し合った後、その話を全員の前で発表しました。

一つの例として：

　 ノルディックウォーキングをしている場面です。大学生のチームが練習をしている所です。ここはエストニアで湖畔を歩いていますが、後ろには古城が見えます。春の気持ちの良い日で、正午前のひと時です。ノルディックウォーキングというのはポールを両手に持ちウォーキングをする活動ですので、通常のウォーキングに比べると、全身の筋肉を使いますので、フィットネスには理想的です。

この発表が行われているときに、ある参加者がたまたま持っていたウォーキングポール（折り畳み式）を取り出し、どのようにする

のかを実演して見せてくれました。

Demonstration: Alphabics

A participant recently got her instructor license of Alphabics. Alphabics is an exercise of releasing stress. According to her when we are relaxed, our brain is in its alpha wave state.  Alphabics exercise aims to make our brain in alpha state with the help of abdominal breathing and specific music.  She demonstrated it and all of us followed her instructions and did exercise for a short time.   

アルファビクスいうのはストレス解消の健康法です。私たちの脳をアルファ波状態にすることで、リラックス効果が得らます。ある参加者は最近このアルファビクスのインストラクターの資格を取りました。彼女はこの健康法の説明とデモンストレーションをしました。彼女の指導の下、サロンの全員がラバーバンドを使うこのエクササイズに挑戦してみました。

Discussion: information illiteracy

The salon discussed disadvantages and inconveniences caused by limited access to information.  Many senior citizens feel left out of information, because they cannot fully use information devices/tools.

One told her experience. Recently she needed to apply for an event via email.  She has a new mobile but she does not know how to send email. Then she asked a staff member of the center to text for her.

Another said that “WhatsApp” and “webinar” may be used as tools of communication for the meeting that she regularly attends. “I will be left out of communication because I do not know the new tools at all.”, she added.

The other had an experience of the disadvantage when she went to Tokyo Disneyland recently.  Everything is done by using its application there: booking attractions and rides, reserving a restaurant, etc. Even there was no paper maps/plans available.

情報へのアクセスが難しい高齢者にとって、なかなかチャレンジングな世の中となりました。いわゆる「情報弱者」であるために不便な思いをしたことがある、不利益を被ったことがあるか、について話し合いました。

一人の参加者の経験は「なか区民活動センターであるイベントを見つけ、参加したいと思ったが、Emailで申し込まなければならない。Emailの使い方がわからないので、センターのスタッフの方に自分のスマホを渡して申し込んでもらった」というものでした。

「自分がかかわっている活動で、これからWhatsApp やwebinarを使うことになるかもしれない、といわれ、自分にはそのようなツールの知識が全くないので、取り残されていくような気分になった」と話した人。

 別の人は最近ディズニーランドに行った時の経験を話しました。ディズニーランドでは乗り物やアトラクションの予約などすべてアプリを使って行われます。それがないとレストランの予約もできません。また紙の地図も配布していませんでした。年配者には難しい場所です、とのことでした。

Work: the most important year in my life

Each picked up their most important year/unforgettable year/memorable year in their life and wrote it on a card. All cards were placed on a board in order of the timeline. The participants explained why the year is important one by one.

The year when my first child was born

The year when I started to live in Germany

The year when my beloved dog passed away

The year when I met a nice guy

The year when a watershed event occurred in my career

The last participant said the year 2022 would be the most memorable year because she joined the salon for the first time, and all participants clapped for her comment.

「自分の人生で最も重要・忘れられない年」というテーマで、参加者がカードにその年を書きます。そのカードを時系列にボードに貼っていきます。そして一人ずつ前に出て、なぜその年を選んだのか、を説明しました。

「最初の子供が生まれた年」、「ドイツでの生活を始めた年」、「愛犬が亡くなった年」、「素晴らしい男性に巡り合った年」、「仕事において重要な出来事が起こった年」など。

 最後の人は「2022年は忘れられない年になります、このサロンに初めて参加できたので」と語り、拍手喝さいを浴びていました。
